Used as a potent loop diuretic in the treatment of edema associated with congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, renal disease (including nephrotic syndrome), and hypertension; also used in veterinary medicine; acts by inhibiting the Na⁺-K⁺-2Cl⁻ symporter (NKCC2) in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle.
