Used as a sulfonated aromatic monomer for the preparation of proton-exchange membranes (PEMs), fuel-cell materials, and ion-conducting polymers. Also employed as an intermediate for sulfonated poly(ether sulfone)s, as a solid-acid catalyst for esterification, and as a building block in organic synthesis for dyes and functional materials. The chlorine atoms can undergo nucleophilic substitution for further functionalization.
