Used as a rigid neutral bidentate N-donor ligand in coordination chemistry for constructing metal complexes, coordination polymers, MOFs/COFs and supramolecular assemblies with Cu, Co, Ni, Zn, Ag, Fe, Ru and other transition metals. Also employed as a bridging ligand for porous framework materials, as an N-donor ligand in Pd/Ni-catalyzed coupling reactions, as a precursor for luminescent metal complexes and optoelectronic materials, and as an intermediate for imidazolium salts, NHC precursors and functionalized biimidazole derivatives. The bis-imidazole core mimics the histidine imidazole coordination environment in metalloenzyme active sites.
