Used as a topical wound dressing for the treatment of exuding wounds (e.g., leg ulcers, pressure sores, post-operative wounds, diabetic foot ulcers); acts as a highly absorbent hydrocolloid/dextranomer hydrogel that absorbs wound exudate, bacteria, and debris via capillary action and osmotic pressure; also used in pharmaceutical formulations as a tablet disintegrant; in column chromatography as a size-exclusion medium (e.g., Sephadex® is a brand of cross-linked dextran); in drug delivery systems for controlled release; in ophthalmic preparations as a viscosity enhancer and lubricant.
