Description |
Pyrantel pamoate is a light yellow crystalline powder. It is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic that kills intestinal parasites such as roundworms, hookworms, and pinworms. Pyrantel pamoate inhibits the cholinesterase of parasites, causing neuromuscular paralysis of the parasites, thereby expelling them from the body. It is usually made into an oral preparation for use. In clinical applications, it is often used to treat intestinal parasitic infections in children and adults. For example, for common pinworm infections in children, taking pyrantel pamoate can effectively eliminate parasites and relieve related symptoms, such as anal itching. |

| Synthesis method | Pyrantel pamoate is synthesized by first reacting 2-(2-thienyl)ethanol with 2-mercaptobenzothiazole to form a thiazoline intermediate. This intermediate is then reacted with 1,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidine (formed by cyclization of ethylenediamine and acetaldehyde) under basic conditions to produce pyrantel base. The base is subsequently reacted with pamoic acid (a dicarboxylic acid derived from naphthoquinone) to form the pamoate salt. The final product, pyrantel pamoate, is isolated as a yellowish powder, typically used as an anthelmintic for treating parasitic worm infections. |
